ISEE Lower Level Math Review

Math skills are tested in the Quantitative Reasoning and Mathematics Achievement sections of the ISEE Lower Level. The ERB follows the standards set forth by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) to determine how the ISEE will test a student’s ability in mathematics. Students taking the ISEE Lower Level should be familiar with the following concepts, as stated by the ERB:

Numbers and Operations

  • understand numbers and ways of representing numbers; and
  • use all four mathematical operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) accurately.
  • make reasonable estimations using fractions and decimals; and
  • accurately compute addition and subtraction using fractions and decimals;
  • use properties of the numbers and operations.
  • find equivalent forms of fractions, decimals, and percents.

Algebra

  • identify, extend, and find rules for patterns and relations.
  • identify, compare, and extend patterns; and
  • find and use rules that can contain variables.

Geometry

  • identify, determine characteristics of, and describe geometric objects.
  • classify and describe basic 2- and 3-dimensional figures;
  • understand and use coordinate grids, including transformation of geometric figures; and
  • understand the concepts of congruency, symmetry, and similarity.

Measurement

  • understand and determine measurable attributes of objects.
  • find the perimeter and area of regular and irregular polygons;
  • develop strategies to find the volume and surface area of rectangular solids;
  • convert between units in both customary and metric systems; and
  • identify tools and units associated with length, weight, capacity, temperature, and time.

Data Analysis & Probability

  • collect, display, interpret, and make predictions about a set of data;
  • calculate mean, mode, median, and range of a set of data; and
  • find the probability of a simple event.

Mathematics Review

Listed in the column to the right, you’ll find quick review guides for the 26 important math topics tested on the ISEE Lower Level. Though you may be familiar with a concept, it would behoove you to review the information and complete the practice.

It is important to note that some of the concepts covered in this review are ones that you probably have never seen before. Do not worry if this is true. Instead, you should solidify your knowledge of familiar concepts, and then begin building your knowledge of the new concepts.
