The Upper Level of the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is one of the most popular admissions tests for applying to private high schools (grades 9 – 12) in the United States. Administered by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB), it is a 5-part, 3-hour exam, which can be taken up to 3 times a year.

As of fall 2016, students can now take the Upper Level ISEE up to three (3) times a year but only one (1) time during pre-defined three-month periods (example of 8th grade student applying to 9th grade):
- Spring semester of their 7th grade year (April to July)
- Fall semester of their 8th grade year (August to November)
- Spring semester of their 8th grade year (December to March)
Parents can also now review scores and decide whether or not they want to submit them to schools (Before fall 2016 students could really only take the exam once and that score always got sent to schools without parent review).
The Upper Level ISEE is for students applying to select independent schools for grades 9-12. Students applying to grades 7 and 8 take the Middle Level ISEE. Students applying to grades 5 and 6 take the Lower Level ISEE. Students applying to grades 2 – 4 take the Primary ISEE. Note that not all independent schools take or require the ISEE so check with your target schools’s admissions department before prepping!

Most students applying to an independent high school take the Upper Level ISEE in or around January of their 8th grade year. Therefore, we recommend that students start preparing the summer before their 8th grade year starts. The time consuming part of test preparation is simply ensuring that students have a firm grasp of the tested academic material in math and English. If your child is weak on fractions, that will take some time to remediate.
No, contrary to popular belief, tests like the ISEE, SAT, and ACT cannot be “beat.” If students don’t know basic vocabulary, there’s no amount of tips or tricks that will magically imbue them with this knowledge. Therefore, a student’s academic grades in school are the best predictor of their success on the ISEE. The Upper Level ISEE is a standardized way for high schools to measure applicants’ performance from different schools. The best type of preparation is that which ensures students know the fundamental concepts that are being tested in math and English.
